Cave of Nutrition

Another lazy day! A pattern emerges from our Burgundy stay...

We waved the Belgian guests off, and again had the house to ourselves. J and A made the most of it, (and the fact that the weather was less rainy) by spending the morning in the pool, and following up with some bike riding. Our host had been duck hunting this morning so Baz watched him clean his catch of three ducks.

I then dragged the family back to Beaune for lunch at Koki food shop, hosted by 1 star Michelin chef Laurent Peugeot. It was a tasty Japanese fusion menu, not as fancy as it sounds and a quite light meal but worth it to check a Michelin rated venue off the 'to do list'. It was a very funky little space with the cutlery presented in rocks!

Foie Gras

Nuits-Saint-Georges (or Nuts George as Baz has dubbed it) was our next stop, looking for the Fete du Cassis (black currant) that had been heavily advertised. We headed to the centre of town and wandered around but couldn't find a fete at all.

We weren't the only lost punters, a number of French folk stopped their cars to ask us directions- ha! Good to know we don't have 'Australia' stamped on our foreheads but we still couldn't find it. Eventually we saw a sign with an address some 10 minutes away by car but by then the rain had settled in again, and we couldn't be bothered so we ducked into a local pub for a beer and to watch the end of the f1.

It was a tiny little bolt hole with an amicable publican who served your beers to the table after you ordered, and two local blokes in matching neck braces? Maybe a post pub accident of some sort? They also had some funky metal signs, faux vintage I'm sure but cool nonetheless.

Back home for the kids to dive into the pool again (definitely got our money's worth there) and then after feeding them dinner and bunking down with a movie and a French babysitter from the nearby village, Baz and I headed back to Nuts George for a dinner sans enfant!

We had been recommended the Caveau Nuition, a restaurant opened in an old wine cellar. We have seen a number of cellars converted to restaurants and shops both in this town and Beaune. For some reason my brain just keep thinking Cave of Nutrition! I must translate the real name and set my mind straight.

Escargot and Coq au Vin were on the menu, as well as a lovely bottle of local Chardonnay and we enjoyed a peaceful meal together.

Heading back to our car, we spotted a Casino sign, however Baz informed me this was just a convenience store- it's a common name for them. He'll have to save his euros for Monaco. Where to hire a tuxedo for that visit though?

We check out tomorrow and head east for Lake Annecy and the Alps. It's tempting to stay longer as its so comfortable here, but there are things to see!
